Dr. Matthew A. Dow
Dr. Dow was born in Takoma Park, “Sometime in the last century, about midway”. He is a graduate of Columbia Union College, which is across the street from where he was born. He earned a Master of Science degree in Entomology from Virginia Tech. Research and long periods of time in lonely research labs didn’t agree however. The solution was found back in Maryland at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry where he earned his D.D.S in 1979. Two years of private practice in Silver Spring proceeded an invitation to “become a country dentist,” that’s how it was presented to him by the dentist who proceeded him in Taneytown, which led to “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, to come to Taneytown in the fall of 1981.” He says “the best decisions I ever made was marrying my Wendy. Second best was our daughter Megan, who is a school counselor in Montgomery County. Also second best but later, my son Zachary, who is in MIT Management with the National Emergency Broadcasting System. My latest best decision was to ask Dr. Wilkerson to join me here in Taneytown. She is fun to work with, a good hearted person and possesses extremely high skills as a dentist. I got a good one.”
Dr. Dow's Retirement Letter:
My Dear Good People,
It’s happened! I am retired; finally. And I am in the process of figuring out this last phase of my life’s journey (not to sound morbid – I do hope I’ll have a long stretch of it).
Right off the bat, it feels like vacation, but I know it isn’t and I bounce back and forth between feeling like I need to gear up in my mind for the next day and conserve energy for it, as if I am going to work, and then realizing I can do “whatever” and relax doing it. It’s very odd.
Most of what I’m getting now is to relax and let the pressures fall away; and that is sweet. Until now I couldn’t realize fully the weight of all that – and the cost. To you, I suggest you inventory your lives and see where you can simplify and ease what is on you. One of the smartest things I did early on was the decision to work 4 days a week. Yes it was a big cost monetarily ($$) but the payoff was I didn’t burn out after 20 years as some of my colleagues did and got to enjoy you all longer than I would have. And I did enjoy you all.
What I am most proud of in this place is that I was blessed to be given a partner in Dr. Wilkerson that embodies all of what I was hoping for in a partner and more. She is very good hearted, technically talented, and ethical, with a great sense of humor – oh how we have laughed. So to know that I have left you in good hands is a great comfort to me.
For those of you who have discovered my retirement with no warning, I do sincerely apologize – there were reasons why early on we could not send out a letter and I feel bad that it could not be avoided ( I will not go into the “why” of that – it would serve no purpose).
Take some comfort in that the terrific women that I was privileged to work with for so many years and that you all have come to know and appreciate are still there for you. Dr. Wilkerson is very fortunate in that regard to have such a wonderful staff. I sort of hate to admit it – because it dates me so, but the ladies and I had been together so long that somewhere along the line – behind my back- they began calling me Dad.
So thank you all for all of your support, confidence, and the kindness you have extended to me and the staff. I wish for you all the peace that I have been privileged to discover.
